Localizers Sound Off About Digital Manga’s Payment System

Neat little article that popped up today! *waves*

There is also a link to an ANN entry in the article about some yaoi releases starting in Sept/15.

And according to June, they released some updates on their delayed schedule.

What it literally comes down to is that we MAYBE will get one boy's love book a month for the next year. Sublime releases are played close to the vest but they were hardly any better last year & I can't see them pumping out more.

Scarce times for BL enthusiasts trying to go legit (-_-)

I'll miss you, Hex Files :(

TheHexFiles and HPFandom are both closing in a month.

Get to saving while you still can.

The Future of The Archives

We are down to our last month of hosting for both The Hex Files and HPFandom. I have always said that I would like to keep the archives active and available for everyone, but it's starting to wear on me.

I had been in talks with AO3 to transfer the archives to them, but in all honesty, I am one person and because the archives are in eFiction version 1, they just can't be automatically moved. It would require me hand entering each and every link for each story into their system. We are talking about over 8,000 stories. I would love to be able to move them, but it's just too much for me to even comprehend doing.

I could keep asking for funds, but I really dislike doing that, and I will not use ads. The logical conclusion for me is to let the archives go. I have enjoyed being here for the fandom, and I am so very thankful for everything that has been done for us over the years. Please know that I am very conflicted about this.

With that in mind, that gives you the readers, a months time to save what you want to save.

Border Volume 03 by Kazuma Kodaka

Border Volume 03 is available for digital download but it's a DMP ver.

https://www.emanga.com/detail?itemid=827&returnurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.emanga.com%2F

I ordered all three volumes since they were available (but I kinda feel a bit cheated because DP's scan ver. are WAY better for volume 01 & 02 & the SFX aren't edited.) It wasn't a lettering problem this time but the english is really stilled in some places & just plain incorrect in others. But I really wanted to support Volume 03, since I can only hope they'll finish the entire series.

For a look at what I mean by "lettering problem" in the above paragraph, take a look at some of these shots from "Lies Are A Gentleman's Manners"

Seriously, the squishing of fonts just looks entirely shitty to me. Am I being too picky maybe?

Interview with Est Em

http://www.tcj.com/an-interview-with-est-em/

I don't know if anyone saw this interview with Est Em but if you are a fan, it is a good, longer read.

She has an attitude toward scanlations & the community that I thought was very open - it put me in mind of Neil Gaimen's thoughts on piracy as well.

/partial quote

ee: You have all these amateurs coming up, and so many scanlations and things like that, so you really need people at the publisher level to be paying a good price to serious professional translators and producing works of real quality.

ja: Right. We talked about the bootlegs before too.

ee: We did. Naturally, being read is basically my top priority, but if my manga ends up opening up these girls’ world and they end up wanting to know more, that might lead them to the official book or whatever. In the end, though, I draw because I want people to read me. I can’t say anything against this broader scope. I’d actually say instead that all of this is because there is this potential in manga. It’s just that price and speed are serious issues. So you can’t just denounce the pirating, you have to look at how you do manga, how you change things, how to actually get it to readers.

ja: Right, exactly. As long as there are no other options, the bootleg versions are going to keep coming out.

ee: Because while there are fewer and fewer people reading manga in Japan, there are so many possibilities out there in the world.

/end quote

It's not a validation - especially not if it's something you can already buy & read in english - but it's a recognition that some of us are fans and not just rotten scoundrels in it for dirty pirate money. She's also smart about the publishers needing to step up & coincide with international publishers. But I think the only thing that will make them pay attention to ebooks is sales.

Nakama & especially Ari have been very supportive of Sensei's work. Let's try to make this a success for Tetuzoh Okadayo's foray into digital comics <3
